Hi. Picked up a German Blinking eye clock recently. Marked on the base Germany 1848. I know this is a 20th century reproduction but can't seem to pinpoint a manufacture date. Descent quality, not junk. It's in the form of a Toby somewhat similar to the Bradley and Hubbard Continental. Interestingly the eyes move laterally instead of vertically like the antique model. Having trouble posting pictures so will post some a little later today hopefully. Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks

You are right about the clock being a reproduction and it's not German, despite what is says on the base.. These repros have been made (I think mostly in Taiwan, if I remember rightly and also possibly China) for quite a number of years and I don't know of any way to date them accurately.

If I had to estimate I would say 'second to third quarter 20th century' but others may know more.

A series of "blinker" shelf clocks were produced in the US in the last 1/3 of the 19th century. The cast iron cases are generally attributed to Bradley and Hubbard. They have been extensively reproduced. Some were made to deceive and may be quite convincing. Some of the repops are pretty bad.

Repops like yours always popping up. Not the best quality. His expression looks like he is straining to go to the bathroom.
