I am extremely sad to report that the originator of this thread, George Nelson, passed away quietly yesterday evening in Knoxville, TN. He was the most kind and gentle person I have ever known. He is survived by his wife of 20+ years. Besides being a missionary for many years he was also the consummate collector we have had the privilege of sharing clocks and clock stories, an author of a number of wonderful short stories, and also worked in retail training for a major company. He asked many questions and by doing so he educated us in more ways than one might expect. His kind contributions to this site will be greatly missed.

george was a truly warm and gracious spirit. his contributions here revealed both his unbridled passion for clocks and a temperament that should be a model for all all posters. we had several offline conversations and shared more personal stuff back and forth over the relatively short time i knew him... i knew he lived w medical issues/complications but was hoping this day would never come. very sad, and a real loss. 8-(

We could all learn a lot about posting from George's model if you will.....I had not thought much about a need to be kind on line until reading his contributions and taking note of his approach. He did it naturally, I need to think about it.....

I hadn't been here long enough to get to know George's post or the man himself. From the looks of it though he certainly made an impression. The whole internet has always needed people like him.

I never had the opportunity to meet George in person. However, I felt I got to know him just a bit (albeit much too briefly) through the MB as well as through outside e-mail "conversations" and a book that he wrote and was kind enough to share with me. And what an honor it was to have made his acquaintance.

His interest in and enthusiasm for clocks was wonderful and lit up the MB.

But it's not just that. I think this outpouring of remembrances about him also demonstrates that a clock can serve as an entre to much more that's meaningful. His postings really embodied that.

    George, requiescat in pace.

A couple of things struck me about George: he had a very discerning eye when it came to picking up clocks for his collection, and he was incredibly humble; both of which should be characteristics we could all learn from and strive for. He contacted me a number of times outside of the MB seeking information about his clocks. It's always flattering when someone you've come to know as a very knowledgable collector seeks out your opinion. The truth of the matter is that his breadth of knowledge probably far outstripped mine, and I should have sought out his thoughts on clocks that I've come across. I'll never have that opportunity now. I wish I had had the opportunity to meet him in person.

I was also quite sad to hear about his passing. 62 seems far too young. As others have already mentioned, his passion and thirst for knowledge were very apparent, and he was always very receptive to any information you would send his way. He did have quite a good eye when it came to clocks, and I had actually saved many photos of his clocks (for reference) because they were quality pieces worth documenting. He will be missed.

I'm so saddened to hear this. George is one of those people who had a way with words that painted picture of a knowledgeable, thoughtful, kind and gentle person. Every time I read one of his posts, I thought, boy I wish I could write like that and be like him. I never met George in person, but was always hoping our paths would cross. I'm sure people who met George were better in one way or another for having the opportunity. My thoughts and prayer and with his family and friends.

Goodbye George... I still hope our paths cross some day.

George recently passed away. I've posted excerpts above from another thread that discussed it.

    Jim,

Thanks for informing us of this sad news.

I do not recall many conversations with George, but I do recall his contributions to this board containing a large dose of dignity and respect, which, unfortunately, is missing on this board at times.

    Rest in Peace, George.

He certainly came across as a very nice guy, he sometimes posted on threads about my growing collection and was very supportive. We are pretty much the same age too.

George was a member of our Beta test team for the new Xenforo software among his many other contributions to the MB. He was a member here for more than 10 years and as already mentioned by others was a constant source of civility and calm discussion even when opinions greatly differed. He most certainly is missed, my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

George mentioned awhile back that he had been asked to write an article for the NAWCC bulletin. Does anyone know if he ever finished it and if it was published.

I think there is an article or two coming out in the very near future in the NAWCC. George asked me to review what he had written and he later indicated it had been submitted and approved. I think he thought one would be in the upcoming issue. I last heard from George on 3-2 and he had stopped dialysis and was entering hospice care. Truely a unique fellow and very caring for all, he indicated he and his wife were in the garage sorting through some stuff he intended for me before entering his extended care.

    Here is what he said late last year in regard to publishing;
"I currently have two articles submitted and accepted after peer review for publication in the Bulletin, which most likely will appear next year. One is on Smith's Clock Establishment and the economic panic of 1837, and the other presents information and pictures of my last (so far) acquisition, the reeded column and scroll clock by Ives and Lewis. I had fun writing both."

When I read someone's posts on a message board I don't think about their age,
or what they look like, or their health(because I don't usually know them personally). What comes through is their "words"
(i.e. the way they communicate)that is how I mentally see them. In Georges case not knowing his health issues, it was a real surprise to me
that he passed because it was the furthest thing from my mind when I read his posts.

Thanks Jim, George mentioned he was going to write an article and I'll look forward to reading both of them. George had a real gift when it came to a story about a clock and was just as excited even if it belonged to another member.
