French Slate Project

Afternoon guys! I have found a French slate mantel clock locally which I collected today. £50 so it was pretty cheap!
It is going to need a fair bit of TLC though me thinks :excited:
Initial observations are….the pendulum is missing, the key is missing, 2 feet are missing, the anchor appears to be missing a peg on one side so doesn’t engage the escapement wheel.
The slate has one bigger chip out of it and a few minor ones. Should hopefully all be repairable.

Interestingly, there are 2 small indents on the top which look like they may have held a finial of some kind?

The movement (although I’ve not had it out yet) looks very dirty, so it’ll no doubt need a full strip & clean. Appears to be by S. Marti & Cie (Medaille de Bronze)
:)

A few pics…..

Nice clock! I don’t understand about the peg missing on the arbor. Is it a broken pivot? Can you elaborate on that?

The pic is a little fuzzy, but looks like it might be missing a pallet jewel on the left.

Great price for a visible escapement! It will be a very nice clock when you get it repaired!

Thanks guys! Yea, I thought it was maybe a bit of a bargain!
Sorry that picture wasn’t too clear….my terminology perhaps doesn’t always help. :chuckling: Hopefully these pics are slightly clearer. The first shows the good side…any thoughts on the best way to repair that, I’d love to hear:)

You can purchase those pallets from Timesavers. They were originally shellacked in. I think Timesavers has shellac also.

Ah, I wish I had the ability to buy from Timesavers……sadly I’m on the other side of the pond and I’ve never checked to see if they ship internationall…..would be kinda handy if they did though!!
some of the guys mentioned a few places over here on my longcase thread so I’ll have a look back and see if I can hunt one down :)

I’ll need to grab a pendulum too…there’s a few on eBay just now. Only thing I’m wondering is if the weight will affect things too much….there are quite a few differently weighted options!

Size is important, so be sure to measure yours and order accordingly (width, not length). Also note how they are mounted so you can put the new ones back in the same way. The orientation of the curved part is important.

And just to add to your store of suppliers, yes, Timesavers will ship worldwide.

Thank you! Yes, I had a quick nosey on their site earlier and spotted that. That’s fantastic news as they seem to be a superb supplier :)

Cheers….digital callipers are at the ready! I did note the orientation would likely be a factor to engage with the wheel :thumb::)

Snorty, You can order from Timesavers online but they also still have a nice fat paper catalogue which they'll mail you with your first order, if you request one, and which makes very good reading.

Ah great, thanks for letting me know. Sometimes it is nicer to have a catalogue to flick through. I’ll request one. I’ll be like a kid in a candy store I think lol!

Nice! You might even be able to get one of those working again and re-sell it ;)

Now that would be great! I’m hoping the small pendulum & key will fit the bill for this one too:) Then decide whether to stock pile the other spare bits or sell them off too…..I am a self confessed hoarder though so I probably already know the answer to that:chuckling:
