    To all,

We have updated Item 3 of the Message Board Forum Usage and Posting Rules effective from November 4, 2015. The revision pertains to the rule about links, references to, and discussions about active sales or auctions, clarifying what is and is not permissible for posting on the Message Board. We also revised the item title to incorporate all the topics covered by the rule full item. The complete rules are found here: Forum Rules

I have copied the revised rule below, with the changes shown in BLUE. There is also a copy of the original rule for reference.

Thanks to all for your excellent cooperation in making the NAWCC Message Board a friendly and highly educational venue for all who wish to know more about identification, history, collecting, and repair of watches, clocks, and other horological artifacts.

Should you have questions about this revision, or regarding any part of the Forum Rules, please post here and we will do our best to provide the answers.

I would like to understand the logic behind this rule change. I does not appear to be uniformly enforced.

Eric, the operative word in the rule is "active". The rule specifies that links, references and discussions are prohibited for items in an active sale or auction, and in this instance the post was allowed to continue for the following reasons:

    1) The item was not currently available for sale but was to be auctioned at an unspecified future date. Note that more than a month elapsed between the last post of discussion and the notice by the OP that he had acquired the item.

    2) No location, name, or other information was provided that could enable our other users to find the item unless they also saw it first hand or perhaps found it in an online catalog if one had been posted.

    3) The photos posted were taken by the OP with the permission of the auction house. This conforms with our copyright rules thus is not in violation of those rules.

As can be readily seen by item 2), we also apply the questions "can the item be easily found on the Internet and is it actually active?" to each such posting. For example, if we or another user find the item in an active eBay auction or at a known location live auction and reports that to us, we will quarantine (temporarily remove) the thread until the auction or sale is over.

In general, we allow users to post photos they take themselves of an item they find somewhere they are interested in buying so long as there is no info posted about the "who-where-when-how much" details. This ensures the thread will be solely for the purpose of obtaining identification, historical, and other general information.

Since there is a question with regard to the application of the rule as you have raised, I am reporting this to the Admin and Moderator team for review and will respond again in a few days.

If other users are in the same area as the poster would they not perhaps know of this clock. Sometimes all you have to do is Google a few words to find the item being discussed by a poster.

Kevin, other MB users who may live in the same area as the OP may well know about the clock. However, that is a moot point if they do not report it to us.
