Reports from Justin say that Ruth has continued in ICU treatment, her condition has stabilized somewhat but still critical. Cultures to identify the exact type of pneumonia and flu will take another 48 hrs, EKG today was good, she's on IV antibiotics and flu meds, continuing hydration. Hugh is driving back and forth from Carthage, he's better but still not well. Continuing to need our thoughts and prayers.

    Good afternoon, all!

Received this about an hour ago from Renee and Jim Coulson:

    All,

    >Reached Hugh Overton at 1:12 p.m.today. He said they had 3-4 inches of
    >snow last night so he was unable to travel to Joplin from Carthage to
    >visit Ruth. Everything is basically shut down due to the holiday and the
    >snow. He said he thinks he saw only two cars on the street in front of
    >his house today. He is hoping to get to Joplin tomorrow, weather
    >permitting. According to Hugh, Justin is his strength during this time.

    >For those new to this thread of ³prayer warriors², Ruth Overton is in
    >Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO, after being transferred from the hospital
    >in Carthage. She is in the CVICU. She has the flu plus a strain of
    >pnemonia. She is on a ventilator to help her breathe. She has been and
    >will continue to be on Theraflu, antibiotics and liquids until the [I suspect Renee means "Tamoxifen" here. Can't imagine a hospital
    >culture is back, which should be tomorrow or the next day providing patent medicines to a patient.]
    >(48-72 hrs). ugh said nothing has changed in her condition as of this
    >time.

Hugh, himself, is feeling stronger after battling the flu as well. He
said he still has a ³head cold.²

Folks, please feel free to share this update with other folks that know
the Overtons and ask for continued prayer for both.

We will be in touch with Justin tonight and if there is any change, we
    will email again.

    With love,

    Renee & Jim

    Good afternoon!

System mangled my edit. The sentence should read: "She has been and
will continue to be on Theraflu [I suspect Renee means "Tamoxifen" here. Can't imagine a hospital
providing patent medicines to a patient.], antibiotics and liquids until the culture is back, which should be tomorrow or the next day (48-72 hrs)."

Also, of course, the next sentence starts with "Hugh."

    Sorry about the gobbledegook!

    Best regards!

    Good evening, all!

Good news in this latest bulletin from the Coulsons:

    Hello All!

    >Justin Overton called late this afternoon.

    >

    >Ruth is improving! Doing some breathing on her own. Sedation has been

    >lessened so she is awake and recognizes folks, but still can't talk

    >because of the respirator into her lungs. The lung biopsies will take

    >another 24 to 48 hours to complete, so additional targeted pneumonia

    >treatment won't start until them.

    >

    >

    >Will be talking with Hugh tomorrow and will update you then. As Justin

    >says, there is such power in prayer and he appreciates Hugh and Ruth’s

    >clock/watch friends praying for their health!

    With love,

    Good afternoon, all!

Jim Coulson experienced a medical problem of his own today. This information from Marion Krajewski:

    Hello All,
I just heard from Renee a few minutes ago and she wanted me to share this short email she sent:

"Jim had short-term memory loss this morning so I told him I was taking him to the emergency room. He wanted a biscuit from Hardee’s and we stopped. As we were standing in line he passed out and hit the floor hard. We are now at Memorial Hospital emergency room awaiting a room. He is being admitted."

Please pass this along to all our clock and watch friends. Jim and Renee both have to be added our Prayer list.

    Thank you,
    Marion

    Good afternoon, all!

This just in from Justin Overton via Marion Krajewski regarding Ruth's condition:

    Marion,
I spoke with Hugh a few minutes ago and he made it to the hospital with no problem. Ruth is still improving. She's pretty much doing all the breathing on her own. They're going to do a chest x-ray in a bit and if things look good enough, they may take her off the ventilator by tomorrow. Hugh sounds better as well. I'll be going over there after work and send out any updates. Please let me know if you hear anything further on Jim.

    Thanks,
    Justin

I stopped by and saw Ruth after work yesterday and her condition remains the same. The cultures have come back and as I understand it, it was negative for pneumonia and any other issues other than the flu. They backed the ventilator off for a little while again, but she is still too weak to have it removed. She was awake, but a little groggy. Hugh seems to slowly be improving. I did notice earlier in the thread that it was mentioned that Hugh was admitted for pacemaker issues. My father Mark Overton was the one admitted. He has since been released and is waiting for a reschedule of the heart catheterization he was to have on Monday. It was cancelled due to the weather we had here. I'll be stopping by to see Ruth after work today and will pass along any updates. Thank you Tim Orr for starting and maintaining this thread! And thank you everyone for your continued prayers and support for Hugh and Ruth. Praying for good news for Jim Coulson as well!

    Good afternoon, all!

I had two messages regarding Jim Coulson this morning, one from Joel Warren and one from Renee via the Krajewskis. Here they are:

    Joel Warren (joelwarrenclocks@gmail.com)

Spoke with Renee at 6:30 yesterday. Jim was settling into his room for the night. He will be undergoing some testing today to find out what exactly is going on. Gayle and I could hear him in the back ground contributing his usual "Jim" style remarks. He was in good spirits. He still needs our prayers and support for finding this mystery illness.

    The Best to All,

    Joel

Update on Jim from Renee this morning:

Good morning to all. Jim had his MRI and MRA done last evening. Know he will have an EEG and X-rays neck/spine also. More blood taken this morning. He is finally getting some relief from the pain. Mixture of oxycodone (sp?) pill and an IV pain med as well. He was able to get some sleep after 2:45 am. Long night for my guy but he is resting now. Will update after we see a doctor. Please keep the prayers going!

    Renee

I also spoke with both Jim and Renee a few minutes ago. According to what Jim said, there have been no reports regarding the various tests, but he is eager to get out and get on with a treatment program. Jim says he may have had a concussion when he fell to the floor. Also, as some of us know, this is not the first time he's had a dizziness and passing out incident. According to Jim, this is the third time it's happened, and he is impatient for a plan of action.

Both Renee and Jim sounded good, and thank everyone for their concern, prayers and thoughts!

    Best regards!

    Tim

P.S.: Please note Justin's report just above. I had mistakenly assumed it was Hugh who had the pacemaker, but it is Justin's father who has that.

Latest bulletins on the Overtons and Jim Coulson:

    Update on Ruth:

    Members,

I stopped by and saw Ruth after work today. She has been taken off the ventilator and is using a regular oxygen mask. She was awake and talking as much as she could. Her throat is obviously inflamed from the tubes. All of the test results have come back and she tested positive for influenza B, streptococcal pneumonia, and CMV [Cytomegalovirus]. Treatment for those will continue and hopefully in the next couple of days she can be moved to a regular room and begin physical therapy to get her home. Thank you for your prayers and continued support!

Hi folks! Neurologist came in to see Jim this afternoon. Tests to date are all normal. She does want an MRI of the cervical spine; will check for B-12 deficiency; wants to do an out-patient procedure for sleep attacks (apnea) through Jim’s regular neurologist and is putting him on seizure meds until he has the sleep apnea testing complete and his regular neurologist says he can discontinue it. Said if nothing shows on the MRI of the cervical spine then it is probably a bruise of the brain that is causing the pain that he is experiencing and could take up to six months for pain to go away. Will have a loop recorder implanted to check for heart arrhythmia. Will have PT work with him since he hasn’t been out of the bed since he came to the hospital. Will measure oxygen levels when he is out of the bed and compare to when in bed. These comparisons might give her needed info in the diagnosing his condition. AND, no driving until released by the neurologist. I have become a chauffeur once again. Lol. Signing out for the night. Really feel relieved with the test results so far. I will sleep tonight. Thanks for the prayers - such power!

    With love,

    Renee

Hi, I tried to put the link to the article, but it now wants a subscription to Newspaper. So I went another way.
"Girl, 8, dies in Melbourne hospital in flu outbreak
    Updated 18 Sep 2017, 2:58pm

Related Story: Seven people in Victorian aged care facility die in flu outbreak
Related Story: Six residents dead after Tasmanian nursing home flu outbreak
    Map: Melbourne 3000
An eight-year-old girl has become the latest victim of Victoria's deadly flu outbreak.

Health authorities said the girl died in the Angliss Hospital at Upper Ferntree Gully in Melbourne's east on Friday.

Earlier this month eight people died from a flu outbreak at an aged care facility at St John's Retirement Village in Wangaratta in Victoria's north-east.

The residents who died were aged between 70 and 94, and had other conditions that made them particularly susceptible.

There have already been 13,000 flu cases in Victoria so far this year, nearly double last year's figures.

Flu vaccinations urged after horror season
Health Minister Jill Hennessy said it had been a devastating flu season.

"What this does show is that flu can hit anyone. It can hit the old or the young, it can hit the healthy or the unhealthy and people should immediately reach out for medical support," she said.

"It's not too late to get vaccinated.

"Do not underestimate how serious an illness influenza can be."

Some Victorian private hospitals will accept public emergency flu patients to deal with the load.

    Outbreak spreads along eastern seaboard
Ms Hennessy announced over the weekend the Government would pay for patients arriving by ambulance to be treated in Cabrini and Epworth hospitals, as well as St John of God in Geelong.

"People are not just getting the flu, they are getting very, very sick with this flu," she said.

"We are also seeing significant increases in respiratory illness and pneumonia.

"Today, we're having ministerial roundtable with all of the leaders from the health sector to talk about how else we might better prepare.

"We're not quite sure if the flu season has peaked or not.

"It is right up the eastern seaboard of Australia.

"Queensland has tripled their flu numbers [this season].

"New South Wales has doubled their flu numbers, as has Victoria and it's putting significant pressure on our health services.

"It means that we need things like isolation rooms, intensive care units."

Ms Hennessy said preventing health workers becoming sick was another concern this season.

In my area, they (again) missed the type of flu that was going to be prominent, and made the flu injections to match. They are claiming it will still be 10% effective, and I assume that means if you catch the type that they were expecting. Seems silly to pay for that kind of "prevention", but they are hyping it hard. Probably in hopes of recouping some of the loss on their mistake. I hope they predicted the correct type in the areas that have the big problems!

Unfortunately, the flu vaccine takes quite a bit of time to formulate and manufacture. As a result, the pharma companies needed to provide their best guess in the spring of 2017 as to the strain of flu that will be prevalent in the autumn of 2017 and the winter/spring of 2017 to 2018 (for the northern hemisphere).

It is far from an exact science and the 10% effectiveness this year proves that.

Getting the flu shot now will help prevent the strains of flu for which it is formulated - other strains not so much.

    Regards.

It alternates between the Northern and Southern hemispheres mutating all the time, teams follow it to work on vaccines and develop their best guess for the next shift to the opposite hemisphere. It's a huge and expensive betting game getting the best odds possible but after what happened after WWI it is certainly a worthwhile.

I'm 61, I have had flue twice in my life and will never forget it, I have the jab every year as a result. It's free for me, and always has been as I'm asthmatic.

I don't know any of the people mentioned in this thread but have been following it, I'm very glad to hear that there have been improvements. I've only had what seems to have been a very bad cold and now I'm taking extra steroids to clear my chest, it is a very bad year all round with these viruses.

    Good afternoon, all!

This just in via the Krajewskis:

Jim had a ECG (loop) implanted in his chest this morning which is good for three years. It helps to diagnose or exclude heart rhythm problems as the cause of symptoms such as syncope (passing out) or strokes. He is now off for an echocardiogram. PT came today and he walked for the first time since he got here and is eating better.

Will update when I know more. Please share.

I've only had actual influenza once, I think in 2013. In bed sweating, freezing, etc., and without energy for 10 days. That was the one year, maybe coincidentally, that I didn't receive a flu shot, due to my 40 day hike in Colorado, which delayed my yearly physical. I enjoy the jab.

I've gotten the flu vaccine every year since 1979 and I've never had the flu since then.

I don't get the shots either, and haven't had the flu. My sister gets the shot every year, and usually gets a flu-like reaction a couple of days later. It's not the full blown flu, but it makes her feel a bit sick. I'm meticulous about hand washing and using anti-bacterial sanitizers when I see them in stores. I think that helps as much as anything.

Flu vaccines were released to the public 50 years ago. In the UK, they have been heavily promoted to all people over 65 since 2000. In the UK they are and always have been available free.

Each flu vaccine is designed for a specific variety of flu, and there are now so many significant annual variations that it is a logical impossibilty to predict what next year's outbreak will consist of. And in practical terms is is impossible to manufacture vaccines for more than one variety.

In 50 years there can be no doubt that the pharmaceutical companies will have carried out extensive research on the efficacy of the vaccines they have produced, because they earn vast sums from selling those vaccines. That research will be very simple - they just have to count how many people did contract influenza who had a jab, and how many didn't. The results of that research would be pretty conclusive.

No such research has ever been published.

I conclude that the research (which must have been carried out) demonstrated that having the jab simply makes no difference as to whether or not people will contract flu, which would be the only explanation I could envisage which would suppress its publication.

Vaccinations work, but they rely on numbers. It's all a numbers game in the end and life is a lottery.

    Marty,

I assume that the pharma companies must prove efficacy of the flu shot to the various government organizations that approve the usage of pharma products. I believe this is where the results reside.

And. frankly, I do not believe the results indicate a guaranteed, 100% outcome, only that the chance of developing the flu is greatly decreased. This, of course, is dependent upon a correct guess as to which strains will make their way to the flu season.

    Regards.

According to the CDC, influenza is not a "reportable" disease; therefore, data isn't available to drug companies -- or even to the CDC.

What has been posted here is dangerous propaganda. And most certainly not suited to be published here on a reputable web site. Vaccinations (including flu) save millions of lives around the world annually. To say otherwise and to suggest there is a world wide conspiracy that hides reports that would prove they were ineffective is ridicules. I have absolutely no time for anti-vaxers. If you care to look, there is plenty of research out there on the subject.

"While vaccine effectiveness can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40% and 60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to the flu vaccine."

I agree. But I think we might be approaching a prohibited "political/religious" discussion here. I think we should cool it off a little.

    Scott,
I went and saw Ruth yesterday and she is slightly better. They took her off the bipap, but she is still on a high level of oxygen. She is pretty much over the flu, but is still dealing with the pneumonia. The first doctor that moved her out of ICU moved her too soon. I'll update as things change.

Tim, thanks for the update. From experience my wife had with a staphylococcal pneumonia a few years back it was necessary to keep her in ICU for 13 days until they finally got the infection completely under control. Reducing oxygen during that period resulted in relatively fast deterioration with her breathing and oxygen levels. I pray that Ruth will now remain under that level of care until they can be absolutely sure she is out of danger.

    Jim,

Ruth is doing better every day. They moved her back to the hospital in Carthage to finish her rehab and recovery. Hugh is doing better as well. He's over the flu, but somehow scratched his cornea and developed a minor eye infection. He has been given prescription eye drops and it is clearing up. They thank everyone for the warm thoughts and prayers.
