Hello Friends: Well, not strictly horological in nature, many of the principals are the same. Here I have a bellows for a Eschle Singing Bird in a Cage. Although it looks pretty straight forward, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for repairing this. I have done a little Google research and didn't find much. I can replace the material like I do for cuckoo's, although I've seen some talk of using vinyl medical gloves for material. This looks like leather or a paper material. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

The material is goat skin. It is available at most clock part suppliers.
There are newer materials that will last longer, called Tyvek.
The material that you can get from suppliers is of the proper thickness
to work for bellows. Most other material is too thick. Most easily
available tyvek it too thick, like house vapor cover or envelopes.
Rubber glove material will not hold a fold well and is unlikely to work
well. I doubt it will last as long as proper goat skin.
Do a search on the MB here. There are several good post on doing bellows.
To get the proper fold, when cutting the material, the open end should
be square. Opening too much will cause the folds to interfere. Less
than square will not fully expand.
A relatively new US dollar bill has been said to work well. I've not
tried this. I've used both goat skin and tyvek.

I generally have a supply of bellows material from Merritt's that I use for cuckoos. I'm sure it will work fine.....it's kind of a Tyvek material I believe.

YouTube has a series of videos on this restoration . "Griesbaum whistler bellows restoration" There are five or six videos . More than the bellows are all the valves inside to inspect or restore . Ignoring those valves makes bellows covering a waste of time .
