This English Longcase painted dial has some finger marks on it around the base of the arch, and on the rights and between 9 and 10 o'clock.
Would it be wise to give it a light wipe with some distilled water and a soft cloth?
Is it possible that the numbers may be ink and not paint?

Or just leave it as it is?

    Thank you

Very unlikely to be ink. This is going to sound unpleasant, however it is a well established restoration/cleaning method for paintings. Cotton buds and your saliva, and gently wipe away the dirt. You should be able to use this method for cleaning the painted parts of the dial as well. Obviously do a little test, however I think you will be fine.

Thank you for the information. Won't be the first clock I have salivated over. ☺

You can also try mild soapy water on a soft cloth. Most of these dials are painted with pretty durable oil paints, but just be careful.

Have you already tried saliva? Do that first.
