These R.W. Sears watches were the 1st Sears watches. He contracted with Elgin for these for about 6 months before going with Illinois.

These dials were signed R.W. Sears unlike the 1st Illinois that were unsigned.

Serial number 2233136, in a marked Sears Roebuck & Co. Case

Very nice Elgin R.W. Sears PL!
    Great marked case as well.

    I don't think I've seen one before.

Thank you for showing that! Awesome.

In the Elgin private label database that Timeantiquarian and I have been working on, with a ton of help from diveboy, genejocky and Nigel, we have one R.W. Sears. Serial 1911032. It's an 18s,11 jewel, Gilt hunter, grade 10, with only the dial marked. I have no case info noted.

The dates match up, but I have to wonder if the movement should be marked like yours. Yours is a better grade watch though, with 15 jewels.

    Rick,
I would guess that someone has used a Sears dial on a non-Sears movement I assume you are talking about Elgin?
Sears only contracted for less than 1000, most Likely about 600 in the 2230000 range in 1886, and all of the movements were marked "The R.W. Sears "on the barrel bridge and matching dials.

Yes it's an Elgin, and thank you for the information.

Typically we don't add dial only P.L.s, for this very reason. Too easy to switch em around.

What a neat piece of history you have there!

Well at least I've now learned that an r w. Sears Elgin should most likely be a grade 82 in the 2230000 range, with the barrel bridge marked.

Darn dial only p.l.s. Here I thought I had something neat to contribute. I only put this one on the list because it was so interesting, and it bit me in the rear.

    Rick,
If I had a Elgin R.W. Sears watch with a bad dial or a plain Elgin dial I would be knocking on your door. It is a rare dial by it's self.:D:)

This is what Bill Meggers in his Bulletin article had to say about the Elgin R.W. Sears Watches.
