“Elgin National Watch Employes Credit Union, SHerwood 2-1570”
(Just noticed the mispeled word, probably really valuable? )
Fellow NAWCC member, David Hanna, gave this to me several years back as he had quit smoking (just kidding on the smoking)! But this “carnival” type glass ashtray goes back several years! Anyone have any idea on the age of this piece? Did this credit union go away when the watch company closed its doors?
Thanks, Brad Maisto, KY Floral #44 Secretary, Owensboro, Kentucky

'Employes' is not a spelling mistake, it is a variant spelling of the more usual 'employees' and was used quite frequently in official writings at least up to the mid-1930s. It would, presumably, have continued longer when incorporated in the name of an organisation, as is the case here.

The phone number of SHerwood 2-1570, as opposed to 742-1570, and the lack of an area code usage, would probably date it to 1970 or earlier.:)

    Regards.

I posted this picture on the “Elgin Historical” Facebook page and was told the use of the “SHerwood” prefix for telephone numbers came into use around 1950. I also find it interesting that the “employes” spelling was used back then! Thanks for the input and I am glad there are a few people out there who enjoy this type of horological ephemera! I would be curious to know if anyone else who looks at this message board owns one of these?
    Thanks Again, Brad Maisto

I haven't seen the ashtray, I have a few money boxes from the credit union and also a horizon watch with a thank you from the credit union engraved on the back.

I have one of these which are probably pretty common.
