I was wondering if anyone made thinner than usual 16s movements. The reason I ask is I have a nice 16s hunter case made by Elgin but a normal 16s movement is too thick.

    How much too thick?
Elgin made more than one 16 size. The 220 is listed as a hunter movement at 6.65mm, as is the 242 but the 237 is listed as 5.0mm. Whereas the 396 is 5.15mm. Scan the list here bidfun-db Archive: Watch Movements

The case is 5.4mm without the bezel or the dust cover snapped on.

There are many Elgin experts here. It sounds like a more expensive movement than the average.

Well there is no movement in the case. I mean that the case is too thin for most movements it seems. I bought the case thinking it was a normal 16s case, but when I tried to put in a movement, the movement was too thick. The reason I mentioned Elgin is it is made by the Elgin Watch Case company.

It seems from Ranfft's list, that movements that were designed for either 12 or 16 size were the thinnest. 16 sizes range from 10.1mm to 6.65mm in general but the size 12 movements , some of which were also listed as size 16 were 5.0mm.

The Elgin Watch Company did not make your watch case. It was made by the Elgin Watch Case Company which was completely separate. The Elgin Watch Case Company made cases for any American movement but also for some Swiss watch movements which were almost exactly the diameter of an American 16s watch movement but which were thinner. I have a couple of these cases in beautiful condition and it is certainly frustrating that an American movement almost fits...but not quite.

Well it looks like from the link that roughbarked provided there are some movements that will work. It just seems like it will be a pain to find one.

Well I guess I lost on that purchase. I really don't know much about Swiss movements so I don't know how I would find a movement.
