Elgin BW Raymond Grade 571

I purchased this watch about a year ago. In looking at the excellent articles written in the Bulletin in 1996 about the Elgin 571 by E. Uberall and K. Singer, I learned that the Elgin 571's sold in to the Canadian market were factory cased. This watch is in a Canadian made case that looks original to the watch. Is this an exception to the rule, or is it a re-case? Thanks, Brian

Your watch appears to be 100% original as evidenced by the 571-specific cut-out near the regulating screw on the balance cock. What makes you think that it is not original?

Nice Elgin! Who doesn't love those bold 24 hour dials?!

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing as Ethan about the cutout on the case. That clicked in my head as something that I remember being on a 571 I had years ago. If it wasn't for that, I'd feel less strongly about it. I do remember mine having a "Cased and timed by Elgin Watch Co." engraved inside the case-back. Most that I have seen have shared that marking, IIRC.

I was also considering that it may not have been unusual for watches destined for Canada to be cased in non "Cased by Elgin..." cases. It seems that the sale that Ethan found would go towards confirming such things (Thanks, Ethan!). Cheers.

I note the Bulletin article referred to in my first post stated the Canadian examples they observed were Factory Cased. The article states Canadian pocket case production may have ceased by the time these watches were produced.
