Purchased this lovely early engraved Dial for my dial collection last week and it arrived this morning .I have never seen a whole dial engraving this early before.even the dial feet are nicely done .Shame there’s no name on it but very pleased with it .Don’t know whether to take it back to brass or leave as is .

A very nice and interesting dial. Don't think I've seen one like that before and I'd also leave as is.

Hi Philip,

It seems very likely that this is a copy of the East dial, certainly not a exact, photographic copy, but a copy nonetheless, and a very competent one at that, with clear indications of some age. How much age is another question, but whenever it was, the engraver was no slouch. I suppose the other question is, are there any other known dials by East with this precise design?

I wonder why the dial feet have square tops?

Regards,

Graham

I mostly agree with Graham although I think it is a partial photo-etched copy, I think this is the image it was copied from as it seems the hour hand outline is not fully erased on Philips dial.

The Roman numerals look to be hand finished as the graver strokes appear visible but it is difficult to see evidence of hand engraving in the lower right corner where a piece of the wax is missing.

Thank god I didn’t pay much for it but in a way it’s still a really nice dial. How did you get the hand in that position Jevan .

The picture is from p.2 of "The Iden Clock Collection", P Dawson (1987), the clock proper is discussed pp. 28-30.

Clock Provenance:
: The Iden Collection
1942: Belmont House Collection
1958: AHS Vol.2, p.149
2017: Bonham's Exhibition, Horological Treasures of the Lord Harris Collection

My initial comment was left in the belief it was good news, had I looked a little closer at the image I would not have posted and I very much regret it now... but its only my uneducated opinion.

Yes I’m sure you are right but that’s ok you win some loose some must say someone made a good job of the back of the dial .I wasn’t sure when purchased in the corners the engraving was very thin and lots of lines with bits missing before seeing your pictures .Regards Phil
