• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

E.Duncan London verge pocket watch.

Hi blanthauer, and welcome to the Forum,

The case hallmarks show that it was assayed in the London office in 1804, and the case maker was Matthew Need at 2 Castle Street, City Road, London.

I can't find a reference to an E Duncan, but this may well be a retailer. The movement has an unusual balance cock design, particularly the foot, and the steel plate, ("coqueret"), is also seldom seen on English movements. The dial numerals with minutes superimposed at the quarters is something I have not seen before.

Do you have any provenance for it?

Regards,

Graham

Appears to be London 1804 according to the hallmarks. That's a unusual balance cock. Very beautiful. Any side pictures of the movement?

Logan

Hi
Thanks for your help and time.
The watch was bought yesterday and I haven't any provenance for it.
I have a question- what is the part marked in white arrow? Is this for chain?

Hi blanthauer,

No pictures I'm afraid. I suspect that you're trying to post images that are too large for the software to re-size; up to around 2mb should be OK, now that the limits have been increased.

Graham

Hi blanthauer,

Still nothing! When you reply, select the "Go Advanced" button which allows you to preview your post before committing it.

How are you adding your images?

[EDIT] Just tried in IE emulation and I can now see 4 image placeholders which give an "invalid image" message.

Regards,

Graham

Nice watch!

The dial is unusual too: I do not remember a dial with th 15, 30, 45, 60 minute numbers set in this way.

Hi blanthauer,

Turning the disc changes the effective length of the hairspring, and thus the frequency of the balance.

This is what's underneath the slide plate:
