This book is a good starting point:Thanks for all the answers!
Can you tell me where you find all the informations about old watches and watchmakers?
What literature can you recommend?
Thanks!
Roman
It says No. just before it, so I think it is a serial number. That's what I was referring to, yes. I could be incorrect but it is a thought.
Well, it says 'Will: Gib Jun.' on the movement, so I would suppose it would be Gib junior not senior.Considering the style, I would guess it would be Gibb senior. At serial number 99, that is a very early piece by him, so could be first quarter of 18th century.
The screw adjustment was a much later development. It is interesting, well to me anyway, that the adjustment for the verge is a wedge in the English style rather than a screw in the continental style.
There is also another very good reason for dating the watch as 1740 or before: the watch is still signed Will. Gib Jun.... I think your watch was made circa 1740 ...
... fits a date of 1740 well ...
This was my guess, about 1740-1750, at the first look and without researching who the maker might have been.I think your watch was made circa 1740.
It seems that Robert's post has not been followed up by later contributors.quick google search yielded this from British Museum,
i want too!!ScrapWhere? Please answer by PN, so that there does not appear a crowd at the location
