• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Does anyone recognize this clock?

My sister is interested in learning more about this clock before making an offer to a neighbor who is selling it. I can't see any manufacturers info in the photos she has sent me and my sister didn't see any when she looked at the clock.

On a side note, does not having a manufacturer's name prominently displayed say anything about the quality of a clock? I have no clock experience, but it seems like if it was made by a reputable or well known company, having their name out there would be an asset.

TIA!

It looks like a nice example of what we call an Anglo-American clock, i.e., an English-made clock case housing an imported American movement. The New Haven Clock Co. and the E.N. Welch Manufacturing Co. supplied the lion's share of such movements, but other American companies supplied movements as well. Without seeing the movement itself, we can't tell much more, unless there is some sort of label on the inside backboard. It should be visible by opening the bottom door. These clocks were popular in the latter half of the 19th century into the early 20th century, I believe. The octagonal wooden dial surround on this general style of Anglo impresses me as a bit less common than a round dial surround, but the dial surrounds are not limited to octagonal and round.

Is there any chance of seeing the movement to provide further information?

I can't answer for the US, but English dial clocks are generally anonymous. They may bear a name but it is likely to be a retailer so we never know who made them. The same with watches, we get the retailer, who may be a finisher, but we don't know who made them.

Branding with a manufacturer seems to have been missing for a century or so and then it gets reintroduced early in the 20th century.

Some Anglo-American clocks with New Haven movements carry a label such as this one:

Hence my question about a possible label. I believe there other labels as well, and that Peter Gosnell has discussed them in NAWCC Bulletin articles. I suspect only a look at the movement in this case will satisfy our curiosity.

In the top right hand corner of message board pages you will find a search box labeled "Advanced Search". Type "Anglo American clock" in that box. There have been a number of related threads which might provide you with added information about your clock and will provide you with added information about Anglo American clocks in general. You will also see pictures of other clocks of this style. I have included a couple of examples of those threads. David, Owen.or

In these type clocks, veneer loss in quite common, it's hard to tell from the picture, but sure would affect the value, it appears nice, although the value of these like other clocks, has slipped.
