My son bought this for his collection. He paid $22 for it. But I can't find any information about it.

ok, so it's not a real louis XVI clock, but it's nice enough. looks to me like the screw that would hold the minute hand in place is MIA.

i forget... does he clean and service them? or just collect?

Hi,

Glad to hear your son is interested in clocks and their repair. The clock is German and has an inexpensive balance wheel movement made around the 1970’s. But it is made in the style of a French Louis XVI period gilt bronze mantle clock. The “Louis XVI” mark on the dial was likely put on by the retailer.

A word of advice: this is a good clock to learn on, but it has little commercial value. If in time your son wants to build a collection I would suggest he save his money to buy far better quality clocks when he finds them. Best of luck to him!

Regards.

If the clock is German, why does the movement indicate that it was made in the USA?

Regards.

My mistake - you have sharper eyes than mine. I did not look closely enough and the part where the markings are stamped is rather blurred. Unusual to see the movement is American, you usually find German movements in reproductions of this kind, hence my comment. Thanks for the correction.

Regards.
