• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

We are making a rule change to allow the discussion of active sale and auction items. That section of the rules now reads as follows:

Offers to buy or sell, links to active sales

  • No form of selling is permitted in any forum, including discussions implying your item may be available for sale. Want ads may be posted only in the restricted "Want to Buy" forum.
  • Links or references to active or completed sales or auctions for horological items are allowed. Please make sure the "Be Respectful and Courteous" and "Copyright Compliance" sections of these rules are followed when posting discussions of this nature, otherwise posts may be removed at the moderator's discretion. Sellers, consigners, employees or other representatives may not initiate threads for items that they are actively selling. They may, however, participate in such threads once started.
  • Requests for parts for repair of your watch or clock are permitted only in the "Parts Wanted" Forum. All transactions for such materials must be made outside these Forums.
  • PM/Conversations are not subject to any restrictions stated in this rule.

This change takes effect immediately.

Is this in conflict with this thread or am I missing something?

So are there different rules for different categories of companies?

Ok I see what you meant and I will fix it.

I think we want to look at
"PM/Conversations are not subject to any restrictions stated in this rule."

PM conversation to rig bids is illegal, (at least in the US) and we can get into trouble if it happens.

This is not affected by the rules change but the change makes it more likely.

There are many laws that apply to our business dealings but we do not call them out in our rules because the law takes precedence over any rule we might create.

I happen to find auction syndication and shill bidding especially onerous, in part because I was involved a few times before I changed my thinking about protecting (or, at least avoiding harming) innocent sellers and inexperienced buyers.

Maybe I'm just dense, but where are the rules actually listed? There used to be a link in the footer, and also in the blue bar at the top of the forum - I think under the Forums heading, but I can't find it now. Where do I refresh my memory about the current rules? I know that they've been changed since I was an admin. Back then, no links or mention of active auctions or items for sale were allowed.

How is this new rule different from the previous version of that rule? What was changed?

Bill,
There is a green button at the upper right of the screen, just above the advertisements.

The previous version of the rule is as follows:

Offers to buy or sell, links to active sales

  • No form of selling is permitted in any forum, including discussions implying your item may be available for sale. Want ads may be posted only in the restricted "Want to Buy" forum.
  • Links or references to active sales or auctions will be removed. Links or references to completed sales and auctions are permitted for discussion.
  • Requests for parts for repair of your watch or clock are permitted only in the "Watch Parts Wanted" and "Clock Parts Wanted" threads in the Watch Repair Forum, Clock Repair Forum, and 400-Day Forum respectively. All transactions for such materials must be made outside these Forums.
  • Links to vendors who sell repair materials and supplies in quantity are permitted.
  • PM/Conversations are not subject to any restrictions stated in this rule 3.

Thanks Dave. I guess I'm blind. But I'd like to point out that that dark green link looks like it's part of the top advertisement with no separator between it and the ad. I ignore the ads on all web sites, so I looked right over the link, interpreting it as part of the ad.

Thanks. That new separator between the rules link & the ad makes it much more obvious. I don't think I would have looked over it if that separator had been there.
