Depth of oil sink ?

Do you cut an OIL SINK just enough below the end of the pivot
so there could not be any "tunneling" if there is any bushing wear in the future ?

They don't actually hold any oil.
On American clocks they are strictly ornamental.

On French, or other thick plated clocks, they are there to decrease the plate thickness. This will reduce friction and alleviate other problems associated with thick plates.
