As ever trying to research one of my watches - I have this interesting chap... the movement seems to be in good condition and bears no obvious mark until I took the dial off, and then underneath I find Depose High Life -124136

I take this to mean that the registered brand is High Life and a serial number of .124136. A quick search on Mikrolisk lead me to think this is from the Berna Watch Factory registered 1943.

The thing is it's Pin Set which I had also understood to have been long gone by about 1920 overtaken by stem winders. There is another High-Life (with a hyphen) registered at 1908 - so I'm wondering if I have this right. I can't locate the maker of the case - but this has a clear mark and a serial number. The case and the movement have both been made with pin setting in mind, so I'm really quite baffled .... any help available ??

Hi Britannicus,

1943 does seem very late for a pin-set, but the entries in Mikrolisk are by no means comprehensive, although the site owner has done an amazing job in researching this subject. As you will have noted, this name has several entries. I suggest that you look instead at Dr. Roland Ranfft's site to try and identify the movement, which is often a more reliable way of arriving at the maker.

Regards,

Graham

Thanks Graham - I've looked at the site, I think it'll take me a while to find my way round it, but a great resource on European watches
