I wonder if anyone can offer some insight on this timepiece. You'll see all the detail in the photos if this posts correctly. As you can see it's a lever-set, 14k, size 16 hunter with low-profile hard cover (crystal) on dial and lucite cover (flat) on movement. Any info gratefully received. Anyone recognize the manufacture mark of the case ? It appears that the system here won't let me upload a front pic for the lid

Hi paineite,

Your watch movement looks to be a Swiss import movement with perhaps 19j, though it's hard to tell. Moving your question to Swiss and other pocket watches forum will help to answer your query.

Still your watch is really very nice looking! Particularly the regulator.

What a lovely watch, with quality throughout! The movement appears to have 16 or 17 jewels (I do not see any cap jewels on the train) and was almost certainly made for Mermod & Jaccard by Agassiz. If you or your watchmaker have a chance to remove the dial during servicing you will probably find their trademarked symbol on the pillar plate -

The solid gold case was made by Jeannot & Shiebler, one of the best American case makers.

Appreciate your reply so very much. Thank you. You know, I was aware that Mermod &Jaccard were prolific producers of house label watches including Swiss. THAT explains why I couldn't fine the plate pattern among the American watchmakers I scoured. So obvious and yet I missed it. Guess that's why we ask the experts. Thanks again.

One other aspect of this watch is that it has a inner crystal. This was to to display the movement and a sign that it was sold as a very high end item.

Mermod and Jaccard marketed lots of watches of both American and Swiss makes. The watches that turn up with their private label are generally of very to very-very good quality. This is trade card advertising their business.-Cort

Mermod Jaccard used their own names for grades. They ordered movements from numerous suppliers and had their name applied to the movements and dials.

The D.C. Jaccard grade started out as a New York Watch Co 18s long cock movement in the first half of the 1870s, as far as I can tell. A Fred'k Billings. It evolved into a Hampden Lafayette variant near 1880ish. Later in the 1880s a few other companies supplied movements like the Aurora Watch Co.

The D.C. Jaccard is one of their top movements in the catalog. Listed as full jeweled and adjusted to heat and cold. A better quality than their "railroad" watch.

As you can tell from the stunning movement inside your watch, it holds true even later when yours was made. At the time "full jeweled" is 17 jewels which yours appears to be (maybe 16 as Jerry says??), and adjusted.

Thank you for sharing your watch! I keep an eye out for Mermod Jaccard, and D.C. Jaccard sightings are few and far between for me. Your Agassiz is gorgeous!

Who were Mermod and Jaccard of St. Louis?
They are both big Swiss watchmaking family names from St. Croix, right?
Is there some relation with this venture?
