• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Cuckoo Cuckoo Pendulum

Does anyone know if cuckoo clocks can be found that have a micrometer pendulum adjustment at the bottom of the wooden pendulum?
A friend of mine wants to get one similar to mine, but can't find any with this adjustment. I told him that my clock is now about 120 years old and they "don't make 'em like they used to"

Indeed I have never see such a pendulum. Are you saying that you have such a micrometer reg. pendulum? I can envision how one could be made. I've just never seen one.

The pendulum on my cuckoo clock has a threaded brass wire fastened to the bottom of the wood pendulum "stick" with a knurled brass nut that screws up and down to adjust the length of the wood pendulum bob. This makes very fine adjustments possible to keep the clock running well under a minute a week. Most of the clocks I have seen just use a bob with a spring pressing against the "stick". Even a small change on this setup is large by comparison.

I have one with a screw into the leaf (bob) that slides up and down on a slot in the pendulum stick, Not quite like yours, but it doesn't slip like most do. Harold

That sounds interesting, Harold. Do you find it easy to adjust for the season changes? Do you know about how old your clock is?

Hi Sidewinder. My clock is over 100 years old. It is harder to make adjustments, only because a screwdriver is involved. I've never seen another pendulum adjusted like this one, nor have I seen one like yours. How hard would it be to adapt to a normal pendulum? Harold

Hi Sidewinder,
You are looking for a rated pendulum, I think, and if you email me direct I will send attachments of photos and info on what you are looking for.

Attached are pictures of a pendulum from an old cuckoo that has heavy cast plates which are pined to the pillars and has some cast wheels. Any idea of the age from the pendulum. It is adjusted with the jnut at the bottom and held in place by the tension of the wires. Bob pend back

That type of threaded wire and nut are very common on the much older cuckoos. I wish you hadn't used the word 'micrometer', here comes RJ!! You out there RJ? Please ignore that word. ;) Mike C.

I would agree it is not a micrometer I was just picking up the thread. My interest is in trying to determine the age of the clock and wondering if the pendelum can help date it. The only date I can find in the clock is what appears to be a repairers note from 1941. The movement has a two digit number on both plates. I haven't found any other marks.
