Hi all, a silly question, what is the difference and how they work. I am getting confused with recoil and dead beat escapemet, more I look at the diagrams more confusing it gets... I have recently purchased a French marble mantle clock and getting confused what the moment it is as I am missing few parts and I want to salvage any spare parts from few clockers !!, see attached photos..:cyclops: look at the second picture and what I need photo as I have the two spare sides to the pendulum housing !, what kind of movement is it puzzled..is it...thanks in advance...igabrie
Re: ~ Confused - whats the difference between dead beat & recoil movement !!?? - help I didn't now Scotland was a region of India.
Re: ~ Confused - whats the difference between dead beat & recoil movement !!?? - help I don't think it is important right now which type it is. From the pictures, it seems that you have the anchor that would have the pallets. You just need the bushing end and pendulum cock. You might look through pictures on the message board here and see if you can see another that is closer to yours. Back to dead beat and recoil. A recoil has only one pallet surface on each side that the escapement tooth lands on ( it may be curved slightly but is often flat ). The pallet for a dead beat has two surfaces on each pallet that contacts the escapement wheel. One surface is curved along the diameter of the pallet relative to the anchors arbor. It is called the locking surface. It imparts no force to the pendulum and holds the escapement from moving. The other surface is the impulse. It is the part that pushes the pendulum. It is the angled surface at the end of the pallet. When set right, after driving with the impulse face, the drop of the escapement teeth to the opposite pallet is onto the locking surface ( this is the dead part of the escapement ). This allows the pendulum to swing, with only a small amount of friction, and the escapement tooth and wheel doesn't move. As the pendulum crosses the center of the swing, the escapement tooth goes onto the impulse face. This allows the push to the pendulum to happen at the center of the swing that is optimal for accurate time keeping. I hope that helps some. Tinker Dwight
Re: ~ Confused - whats the difference between dead beat & recoil movement !!?? - help A quick "Google Search" yielded the following site http://www.angelfire.com/ut/horology/bbigrhm.html It is an animation of a Graham Deadbeat Escapement. The following animation (link at the bottom of the page) is of a Recoil Escapement. If you want to get really confused (or really knowledgeable, the site has animations for about 8 different types of Clock Escapements and about 6 different watch escapements I hope this compliments the information that Tinker has provided. cheers Walesey
