I ordered a small set of four Bergeon oilers and other than the colors I can't tell small from large. They were packaged with the proper designation under each oiler, but once I removed them from the pack away that info flew from my brain.

So, I noticed that screwdrivers as well have the same colors.

Hmmm....I began to wonder if there is rhyme or reason behind colors used in watchmaker tools.

I am certain that info is available, but my books do not mention it.

Thanks Everyone,

AL

I have a little note that I keep on my bench that tells the size/color relationship. I don't remember where I got the
info. Probably from a catalog, or maybe it came with the oilers long ago:

Black: Extra fine.
Gold: Extra fine.
Blue: Fine.
Green: Medium.
Red: Large.

I don't actually have a gold colored one, but I still have that written down.
Something else; I have no idea if these are universal color/sizes to all brands. Mine just say "Made in Germany".

Assuming the online picture is the same as my oilers were packed, here is the chart:

Red = Small (A)
Blue = Medium (B)
Green = Large (C)
Yellow = Extra Large (D)

It's looking like there is no standard, just the manufactures own preference.

Thanks,

The one standard I seem to have noticed over the years is---the "black" oiler is always the small or fine oiler.

Being completely dyslexic, when I got my first set of oilers I filed grooves in the handles -- 1 for Black, 2 for Blue, 3 for Green and, 4 for Red. It's an easier system for me than remembering which color is which size.

It's really not all that much of an issue. As I stated before--black is always small or fine and is used for a large percentage of "wrist" watch work.
Otherwise--just look at the tip of oilers under magnification and use the one that fits best for the application at hand.
