clock mainspring

Hi All
I'm trying to procure a rather rare size of hole-end clock mainspring and I fear that I may have to get it made, but alas, who will do that? Would anybody have any ideas?. I have emailed a few spring makers in the UK but they do not return my emails.The size is 2065mm long, 0.5 mm thick and 27mm high, the inside barrel diam being 60mm and the winding arbor is 15mm.

Ozzy, if you look at the supplier list at the top of the repair forum, you will find an American company that will make a custom sized mainspring. It is Timewise. Larry Wise, Phone # 330-947-0047 Email twclock08@att.net

Have you got any extra room in the width department? Timesavers makes a spring that would come real close to your needs. Their number 19535.

Those dimensions, looks like a phonograph or musical box?

I cannot look in the parts list right now but I have a supplier that sells multiple springs in width 27.

Furthermore: are you 100% sure the strength of the spring is 0,50 mm?
most springs of these sizes are a little thinner, 0,40, 0,42 or 0,45.

Ozzy,

There are several large parts houses in Europe. They have a wider selection of these big springs. Extra shipping will be much less than a custom spring.

Only custom spring I ever ordered was a double length way way long spring for a really sweet high dollar Welch Patti. Mucho denero!

Shutterbug, I had seen that Timesavers spring but it's also too short by about 500mm!

The spring comes from a very old French bracket clock with strike. One spring is the original with the dimensions as stated. The other someone has put in as a very poor substitute- way too short, too strong etc, so I'm after another one.

Antiekeradio, I would appreciate any further info from you if possible and in the meantime I'll also contact Timewise who Harold Bain kindly pointed me to.

Not according to my book! It's just 3 cm shorter than your spec's Although, 2650mm would be a more proper length for your barrel, so maybe you mistyped your length? If so, the Sonora (23137) would be very close. You'd have to cut it a bit shorter and rehole it.

Apologies Shutterbug. Yes I did write the wrong length and 2650 is the correct length. The Senora spring is indeed close to what I need. Just about 2mm shorter in height but the thickness and length, once cut, are fine. Thanks for that. I will keep it in mind if the custom-made option is not practical and/or viable.

my supplier has a spring with the following dimensions in stock:

27 x 0,45 x 2600.

comes coiled up in a wire at 65 mm diameter.

height is the most important size, then the strenght. A spring with the correct strength and length, but of 2 mm less height, will be a bit weak and have too much room in the barrel for (very unwanted) sideways movement.

I see the timesavers spring is almost 2 mm too wide. That will almost certainly give other problems. [FONT=Arial,]28.6mm x 0.44mm x 2098mm
If your original spring is 27, replace with 27. If it is 0,50, you can replace with 0,45 (these new springs will not last as long as the original blue french ones, but are quite a bit stronger at the same size!!)

Hi

Thanks to Antiekeradio for your info. I have contacted Harold's mate Larry Wise and he will make me one to the exact dimensions. Probably a little more expensive the way to go but I think the clock is well worth spending that bit extra on it. And it puts a little money back into the US economy- now that can't be a bad thing can it?!
