    Hi All;
    Can anyone give me some information on this clock? Highly carved Japanese (I'm assuming) with a rooster prominently displayed on the crest. Wood appears to be ebonized or darkly painted. Movement is an 8 day count-wheel that strikes the hours only. I'm wondering who the maker is, approximate age, if the rooster has any significance, and any other info that you may have on this interesting timepiece.

    Regards,
    Doug

    This is the mark of Seikosha (Japan).

    I don't think the bird is a rooster, I think it is a mythical bird called the Hou-ou, (variously rendered Ho-Ho, Ho-oo etc), also called the Japanese phoenix. This creature appears often in Japanese paintings and carvings and usually signifies all kinds of good things.

    It's a Seikosha from around turn of the century.
