i try to check craigslist just about every day for local deals... some of the sellers are a little unclear on basic concepts:

    "antique quartz grandfather clock"

    "antique looking clock"

    "mid evil style"

"the glue has come loose holding the wood pieces but its all there in Great shape"

    "cherry color clock"

'new england clock' (no photos or additional description)

"BRAND NEW - JUST OPEN THE BOX. PAID OVER $4000. ASKING $2200 OR BEST OFFER"

"Seiko Quartz Antique Mantle Clock "

    "Wooden grandfather hanging clock"

    "Wall clock"

on the other hand, you have to give this seller some props:

"Clock Weights in lousy condition. Six of them"

I saw one that was over winded - you know - you run like the wind and get winded - so I guess if you wind your clock too much it is also over winded

At least these sellers easily self-identify as ignorant. You might even find a decent bargain if the Seller doesn't really know what they have. It is the Seller who knows exactly how to lie that you need to be wary of.

ok, this isn't a specific clock listing, but was the first listing when i checked for clocks on craigslist this morning:

    ufo memorabilia

and indeed there are two clocks listed (but not pictured).

it's good to remember those special trips, yes?

This one tickled my funny bone; listed under antique clocks:

"A gorgeous all-brass standing clock made by Timeworks of Berkeley, California, for their series of quality 1906 reproductions (they often fool even clockmaker experts). Runs on a modern battery."

Good thing it does not run on an antique battery :p. The listing did, however, confirm my estimation of "clockmaker experts".

You would think that "reproduction" would mean reproducing the original parts too! I'm sure I wouldn't notice that it used a battery until I had to replace it though!

you can't rely on anybody for a decent description these days. It does mean you can pick up bargains when auction houses are 250 years out dating a clock, but it also means you have to look closely at every listing rather than skipping through filtering out ones that are described as Victorian or 19th century.

After reading some of these hilarious statements, I just HAD to check my local Craigs List and came up with this gem for a longcase clock: "Beautiful Seth Thomas Tempus Fugit clock. Needs repair. Worked before we moved it. Now won't keep time. We Need to get it out of the house soon."
What do you want to bet that the pendulum and weights weren't removed before 'moving' it :???:??

8/10 of the ads I see say "does not work, probably just needs a cleaning", they are mostly wrong. 1/10 says "does not work, has been overwound". And another 1/10 says working well.

As a bit of an aside, most of these folks are selling their parents or grandparents' clocks. They hold a bit of sentimental value, but many have had an estimate to fix and say forget it. It's kind of sad really, I always find it unfortunate when I hear that. On the plus side, most of them are really pleased when I tell them I want to restore them. For sure there are a few flippers out there but I am saddened that the love of things mechanical is being lost somehow.

There’s one that’s back on my local craigslist… ‘antique Seth Thomas regulator wall clock. Been in our family since the 1900s. Battery operated.’

it once was a regulator 2, But now has a nice square hole cut in the back to access the quartz movement behind the dial

In the defense of the seller, the clock was listed as new under Home Décor > Clocks, not under collectables > clocks > antique clocks. I believe that it is the color/paint job that is referred to as "Antique Silver-Tone", rather than the clock itself being referred to as an antique, per se.

My favourite one is "I know nothing about clocks....." - it's a sure sign something is horribly wrong with the clock that the seller is well aware of and is pretending to have no idea of the obvious flaw!

I saw a school clock listed once as made by Amsonia. Another time a lady posted a “1810” railroad regulator clock which turned out to be a Birge and Peck clock with the Puffin Betsy label. Too many kitchen clocks listed as Grandfather clocks to count. Maybe it was their Grandfathers clock.

They have been making reproduction clocks for much more than 100 years. The Victorians made a lot of lantern clocks.

    Antique Clock Antique

Product Description: Go back in time. A distressed wood face with black Roman numerals makes this large antique-style wall clock a perfect time piece for your industrial chic home. Makes a statement from every angle with its wide, rust-finished circular steel frame.

    Item condition: New

    I suppose
    "distressed wood face"
    "antique-style"
    "industrial chic home" and
    "Item condition: New"

are the dead give-aways but you have to love that lead.

Not cheap but cheaper than servicing the real thing, still, the real thing will probably still be around when this thing is land fill.
