Hi,

I just acquired a new clock. I am super excited about it. It needs a little work but I am always seeking a challenge :).

I have a pretty good idea on the model (Ingraham Regulator Eight Day, Strike, Calendar); Western Union edition. I have scoured the web in the hopes of getting the specifics of this clock (Clock & Watch Catalog Page: Clocks - The E. Ingraham Company, Bristol, Conn. U.S.A. > 120). Some of the images I have located have "Ingraham..." on the face plate of the clock. My clock does not. I have also seen a painted black glass (top glass pane) and a "regulator" logo bottom glass pane. My clock has dual glass panes BUT the glass is "wavy".

I have attached a few images and would WELCOME any thoughts or guidance you can provide.

Thank YOU!

My 1903 Ingraham catalog of the Western Union model also doesn't have the Ingraham name on the dial either. Also no "Regulator" on the lower glass is shown. Not sure when yours was made.

thank you, comet61 for taking the time to weigh in. question. does your upper glass pane have the painted black outline? mine does not but the glass is definitely "Wavy"...one more, how did you determine that your piece was constructed in 1903. are there tell tale signs or were you fortunate enough to have some labeling on the back? thanks again!

comet61 used a 1903 Ingraham catalogue.

That said, in April 1897, Ingraham began putting the date of production on their movements. The month was to the left of the handshaft, the year to the right. You might look at your movement to see if the date stamping is there. If so, that will give you the date of the movement and at least an approximate date for the clock itself. Bear in mind that the movement might not have been used immediately, and, of course, it assumes that the movement in your clock is the original.

Thank you, again, Steve & Comet61. I removed the face when I got home this evening and found the date stamp. it looks like July (07), 1903. After pouring through the Ingraham catalogs, I believe that the upper glass must of been replaced at some points as it is clear with no black paint circular outline. It also looks like the movement was moved in the case as some point (see picture). Regardless, the piece appears to be in really good shape given its year and the fact that it is one of only a few years Ingraham produced a Western Union without a "regulator" branded lower glass pane is a bonus (to me). I clearly have some work to do on the spring, but that will be a fun project. Any other thoughts, advice or insight you can impart on this piece? Thank you again for your time!

I should have mentioned that I have seen one of these before at an antique shop in Oregon last year. The upper glass was black painted around the dial with a decorative gold ring. The catalog pic above seems to have that very thing. I do remember that the lower part was painted black inside the case with the pendulum showing. No paint or lettering. Just clear glass.

This model was the very first clock I bought in 1984. Recently sold it and can't find a photo to help me remember exactly what it looked like. As I remember, mine did have the black outlined area on the glass with Regulator on the lower glass. I always felt like the lower glass had a decal placed on it at some time after it's manufacture date. Mine did not have a calendar. Nice find. I was always very proud on mine.
