Clock case stain.

I have an oak 8 day granddaughter long case clock that has a couple of chips in the wood around the feet area of the clock case.
Can someone advise me what is best way to cover these up, or should an appropriate stain be used ? and what is the best way to to preserve the case, either wax or oil.

Some photographs would be nice. I have done some veneer patching. It takes some patience, and a lot of tubes of Liquitex paints.
