I just recently found this web sight and I thought it was amazing.
    http://www.clickspringprojects.com/

The guy makes tutorial videos on YouTube about clock making, and also has machining tutorials on machining various tools and lathe attachments.
He is currently doing a series on building your own clock, and I think it's a great way to learn the basics.
His first video in the clock making series is right here.

Hi Been lurking here a while. Interesting MB! First post or should I say reply?

Chris, who runs the clickspring site is in Australia. Check him out on youtube. The video quality is off the charts as is his techniques.

    Best Wishes,
    Jim

Couldn't agree more, I stumbled onto it a little while ago and was impressed.

One thing I really like is he shows each step. Being more or less self taught there were several steps where I saw new or alternate things.
