Cleaning Cables

While cleaning tall clock movements, do you clean the cables?

I inspect the cables for fraying and damage. In cases where I find defects, I replace the cables.

If no defects are found, will cleaning the cables in anyway damage them? Weather using polishing clothes or ultrasonic?

What is your practice?

Are these steel wire rope, brass or bronze? Do you know whether they have a textile core?

If they are not a material that will rust, I don't see a problem with cleaning them. It's usually not an issue though.

These look to be twisted brass cables. The kind that are purchased as replacements from modern parts suppliers.
