What is the value of this American Waltham William Ellery (s/n 65600) watch? It's in a marked Waltham case (s/n D138).

Thanks for the input. I know the price guide has fairly modest values listed for these, but I was hoping the fact that it's from the time period of the Civil war, plus the fact that it's in a marked Waltham case would increase the value. It's my first Civil war era watch. Does anyone know the composition of these cases? It appears to be silver, but it's not marked as such.

A civil war era 1859 model Waltham in original case is a long ways past a $75 to $125 watch.

Jones-Horan's results archive shows a pair of similarly cased 59 models Wm Ellery's sold some years back at $475 each, though judging from the photos I like the watch shown here better in terms of both the condition of the case and the condition of the movement plates.

The case is silver.

Its a nice looking watch all the way through and I like the attractive original hands. It would be a good piece for anyone looking for a nice 59 model, or more generally a nice representative civil war era watch.

I paid $500 for a similar watch, although yours is nicer than mine. I would have expected anything in the $500-600 range, so I'm glad to hear that it was in that ballpark.
