I may be wrong, but to me it looks as if the name is Lafrenz, not Latrenz, but the image is rather blurred.

    Hi Richard,

Your watch is Swiss, and my best guess is that it never went anywhere near London. The Swiss watch trade produced a great many watches in the 19th century for export with (mostly) spurious names and 'London' on the inner cover, (the cuvette), with the intention of deceiving the unwary buyer. The escapement is as it says, a detached lever, mounted tangentially to the club-tooth balance wheel, and the stated jewel count seems to imply that the pallets aren't jewelled, a characteristic feature in these watches. The case may be silver, but the cuvette is plated base metal, another common feature of these watches. It probably dates from some time in the third quarter of the century.

    Regards,

    Graham

    Hi Rich,

Sometimes the entries in Loomes and other reference books are based on well-known records of makers, sometimes they come from trade directories and sometimes from a signature just being seen on a watch or clock; I suspect the entry quoted by Les is an example of the latter.

    Regards,

    Graham
