Chelsea Deck Clock No. 1 US NAVY

I just acquired this clock and am looking for information on it.
The clock was advertised to work well and keep good time, which it is doing.

No, that is a number assigned by the U.S. Navy.

The Chelsea serial number is stamped on the movement, and often the back of the case.

I don't know if the Navy records survive and can be accessed.

I have asked the question before about the serial number on the dial of these clocks. Far as i know it cannot be tracked to the ship, that the clock was used on. I have one too, and have always wondered.

Thanks Kevin. The serial # is not present on the back of the case. Leaving tomorrow for X mas in Ottawa. I will remove the clock from the case next year and get the serial number.

I contacted Jim Dyson who was very helpful. The number on the back of the case is marked #L36. Removing the clock from the case the serial number on the movement is #107889 which is the same number marked on the dial.

Hi Brian, what other information were you able to get on the clock?

I talked to Jim this morning, and he was a great help. The clock is a Chelsea made during WW I. The case is a Seth Thomas. According to Jim, since the Chelsea fits in to the Seth Thomas case, and the Seth Thomas fits in to the Chelsea case, this is not uncommon to see this marriage, which would have occurred during maintenance. The mounting holes on the case should line up at the top with the 12 position on the clock, mine does not. That was Jim's initial indication that the clock and case were a marriage. He suggests that since the dial is so nice, that I try to find a Chelsea case. Any help finding a 6" Chelsea screwed bezel case would be greatly appreciated.

actually, you probably want a hinged case. screwed bezel chelseas are less desirable as the screws can sometimes get munged… and you have to be extra carefully every time you wind or adjust.
