Hello and welcome to the forum. I saw your post yesterday and looked at my Chelsea #1 to see if it had any numbers. I was hoping that someone else would reply with info by the time I checked back. I personally do not know what the numbers mean, and given that my clock has different numbers in different locations, I can't say that this was a method of serializing all components of a particular clock. My case has 7277 stamped on it while the door frame has the number 4. These clocks are almost identical to a Howard #70 and I've always wondered what the connection between the two companies was. Maybe someone will offer more.

I've attached a few pics of my clock. Best of luck with your research.

The best info I can offer about finding the internals would be to look at a Howard 70. There's one advertised on Ebay now that has pictures of the clock movement, weight, and pendulum. It may give you some insight on how the movement is mounted, or you may want to use the search feature here and look for a Howard 70 where you might find photos. I believe you can still purchase a new suitcase weight from Timesavers. I have seen some Chelsea regulator parts on Ebay in the past, but they are not a common clock, so you may have to make some substitutions. I've never had the dial off of my Howard or the Chelsea so I can't tell you how the movement mounts.

Enid is about 200 miles east of me, I'm north and a touch east of Amarillo. Good luck with your hunt!

Hi Old Clocks,

Congrats. What a great looking clock! I would like to offer a speculation on what the numbers stamped on your clock case are for.

The "7277" I would think is a number put on the owner for inventory purposes. I believe railroads, school districts, etc. did this to be able to identify which exact asset someone was looking at. Probably cut down the number of items "disappearing" considerably.

The "4" is likely a number stamped on by the case manufacturer. If you look at every nook and cranny on the clock case you might find another "4" stamped on it. I believe, the point was so that the correct door could be re-united with the case after the staining and shellacking was complete. I have quite a number of New Haven "Regulator CC" type clocks and the doors all have a number stamped or carved into them with matching numbers carved into the case somewhere. In fact I have two cases numbered 31, which I take to mean that they were number 31 in different batches. It is a fairly common clock. I also see these type of numbers stamped on Sidney Advertising Clocks.

Others may have better explanations. If so, I look forward to seeing them.

Bob

Thanks for the info - I looked around the inner dial frame and didn't see any numbers, but I haven't looked inside the case. I did reach out to Chelsea by email and they said my clock was made between 1900 - 1904. They added that I could get a certificate of authenticity and a service history on the clock for $45.00. I told them that it was a #1 weight driven regulator and gave the 7277 serial in my initial inquiry. That makes me think it is more likely a manufacturer applied number if they're able to pull up the date of mfg. I don't know any of that for certain. If there's a list of Chelsea serial numbers somewhere, that might shed some light on it. Thanks
