I have a Kieninger triple chime grandfather clock. I can set this clock and it runs perfectly for about 24 hours and then the center weight comes crashing down like there is no tension on the center gear train. This always seems to happen around the third chime, last 1/4 hour (5:50, 6:40). It has chains and not cables. Just curious if anyone might know what the issue is.

What model number is on the movement? How old is it? The sprockets on many Kieninger movements are inferior. They have to be replaced or rebuilt often. The click spring set-up is not dependable for very many years.

The clock is from the mid 90's. I am kind of out of town and can not tell you the model number at the moment. I just recently tried cleaning and oiling it. I have not put it back to running, so that it can not crash again till I get advice. I realize it may be hopeless without repair, in all honesty I would like to attempt the repair just for the sake of doing it. If I can not fix it I will end up getting a new movement and putting it in. I am a handy person and can fix most things. So any advice is welcome. I can get the model number later in the week when I return home.

Sounds like you have a SK HM movement which had inferior quality chainwheels. They literally just open up , esp the earlier designs!
If you order a new one , which would now cost about £60 (crazy prices now!), you could possibly loosen the locking nuts and slightly open the plates, pulling out the faulty chainwheel and pushing in place the new wheel. Job done. Just ensure you don't trap any wheels when allowing the plates to close again.
Just check what model movement you have first.
Good luck
