• Important Executive Director Announcement from the NAWCC

The NAWCC Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Mr. Rory McEvoy has been named Executive Director of the NAWCC. Rory is an internationally renowned horological scholar and comes to the NAWCC with strong credentials that solidly align with our education, fundraising, and membership growth objectives. He has a postgraduate degree in the conservation and restoration of antique clocks from West Dean College, and throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to handle some of the world’s most important horological artifacts, including longitude timekeepers by Harrison, Kendall, and Mudge.

Rory formerly worked as Curator of Horology at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where his role included day-to-day management of research and digitization projects, writing, public speaking, conservation, convening conferences, exhibition work, and development of acquisition/disposal and collection care policies. In addition, he has worked as a horological specialist at Bonhams in London, where he cataloged and handled many rare timepieces and built important relationships with collectors, buyers, and sellers. Most recently, Rory has used his talents to share his love of horology at the university level by teaching horological theory, history, and the practical repair and making of clocks and watches at Birmingham City University.

Rory is a British citizen and currently resides in the UK. Pre-COVID-19, Rory and his wife, Kaai, visited HQ in Columbia, Pennsylvania, where they met with staff, spent time in the Museum and Library & Research Center, and toured the area. Rory and Kaai will be relocating to the area as soon as the immigration challenges and travel restrictions due to COVID-19 permit.

Some of you may already be familiar with Rory as he is also a well-known author and lecturer. His recent publications include the book Harrison Decoded: Towards a Perfect Pendulum Clock, which he edited with Jonathan Betts, and the article “George Graham and the Orrery” in the journal Nuncius.

Until Rory’s relocation to the United States is complete, he will be working closely with an on-boarding team assembled by the NAWCC Board of Directors to introduce him to the opportunities and challenges before us and to ensure a smooth transition. Rory will be participating in strategic and financial planning immediately, which will allow him to hit the ground running when he arrives in Columbia

You can read more about Rory McEvoy and this exciting announcement in the upcoming March/April issue of the Watch & Clock Bulletin.

Please join the entire Board and staff in welcoming Rory to the NAWCC community.

Hi Brento, and welcome to the forum,

I've managed to buy it on eBay here in the UK, in a 500ml bottle, which makes it feasible for the small amounts I use in my lathes. It certainly improves the running of watchmaker's lathes. You may be able to find it on your eBay.

Regards,

Graham

Would you consider Mobil Velocite #10 if it is available for less? I have used it and am happy with it.

Castrol Hyspin E5 is a unique oil. There are no exact comparables.

It has an ISO viscosity of 5 and has proprietary additives that gives it enhanced lubricity.

That being said I have never been able to buy it here in New England. At one time my industrial oil supplier said he could get me a 55 gallon drum, I passed.

The closest comparable you will find is any R & O spindle or turbine oil. You will have to choose between ISO viscosity of 2 or 10 and none of them will have the enhancing lubricity additives.

If I still needed it I would spend the money to get a gallon from over the pond and then sell 7 pints off on eBay.

Good luck,

D`

Hi Brento,

As I understand it, the thinner the better to achieve a flushing action, but the lubricity must be good as well; the two things aren't the same.

Graham

Yes, New England as in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

I don’t know over there but over here a gallon is £88 but we get ripped off over here it’s probably cheaper in USA, I got 250ml for £9.50 but the amount we use that should last me for years.

Ok everyone so this is the dilemma. They do not sell smaller then a 5gal bucket. Each bucket is 126.04 prob not including shipping. I returned back asking if they had an alternative and i am waiting to hear back. I was wondering now would anyone want to split up with me if i ordered. I would like a gallon obviously but is there anyone else who would like a gallon. I have 4 spots left. I am not sure what shipping would be to the other person. I am not looking to make money so i would split the final cost into 5 ways and the buyer would pay their 5th of the price plus shipping.

Castrol also has no alternative or recommended oils besides the E5. So my offer still stands
