For the moment, I have most of the clocks I can get away with, in my house. One I'd like to sneak in without her knowing until it's here, is a brass carriage clock. I'd like to have one that strikes. Would someone point me to a book that identifies the better ones, discusses makers, years, prices, etc? I see them in all ranges on ebay, auctions, and I would rather have the real deal for this one. Are they all European? Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Charles Allix and Peter Bonnert wrote the definitive book “Carriage clocks” . That covers what you are looking for. Derek Roberts wrote another which covers Carriage and Other Travelling Clocks but focusses more on decoration and design etc. both can be bought online eg from AbeBooks

France was by far the largest European maker of carriage clocks but they were produced elsewhere in Europe such as England and Switzerland and also in the US. For prices online and auctions are your best bet.

My impression is that the top end ones were chronometer balance carriage clocks. Most of them were bespoke commissions from English makers and they command a pretty penny.

A high grade Grande Sonnerie carriage clock isn't cheap--a good French one should be at least $4k. More if it's English.
