I'd be willing to bet that there is a Seth Thomas model #10 in there. Lever escapement, two mainsprings, no bell. I had a similar one, but the front and rear rim had more of a lip.

Very much like mine wood back. Dual main springs, time only.

I have a very similar one. The only difference is the bezel. ST #10 movement.

Not sure what all the hub-bub is about.

I've seen quite a few of these. Sometimes these are called "boiler room" clocks.

May have originally been nickel plated?

A wooden back board is not at all unusual on these clocks. That facilitated mounting the movement.

Obviously, a lever movement. Probably a double wind time only.

Late 19th - early 20th.

Good evening, all!

I once had a very similar one. It was, indeed, a balance wheel clock with two mainsprings, presumably for long running time. Mine had a wooden back that had an advertising paper glued to it detailing other similar models.

Best regards!

The purpose of the two springs is mainly to provide plenty of power to the movement. The ST #10 movement has been used in a variety of sciebtific and industrial applications, like recorders for temperature, pressure etc. In these applications the movement would not only run the clock but also turn a drum or similar of the recording device. The runtime is 8 days only.

Good afternoon, Uhralt!

Don't want to argue, just want to learn: How is the movement's runtime limited to 8 days? I also believe I have seen versions of 2-mainspring movements that were used to power 15-day and 30-day clocks. What is the difference in construction?

Thanks!

Best regards!

I only know this from my experience with my own ST#10 clock. It will run for about 10 days after being fully wound. Then the springs are very much run down. So, I would call it an 8-day movement. When I wind the clock after 7 days of running, I can make 10 half turns to fully wind the springs. That is plenty for springs in a barrel.

I think there are other clocks around, time only with two springs, that provide longer running times. The difference will be in the gearing of the movement. In these clocks the barrels will make less turns per day compared to the ST#10 movement.
