What are the characteristics one should look for in purchasing a Canadian Hamilton RR watch?

    A Canadian dial:
Dials containing an inner ring of 13-24 hour figures were (and still are) referred to as "Canadian Dials" due their use being mandated by a large percentage of Canadian railways.

    A Canadian-made case:
    Fortune, Empress, Banner, Sturdy, etc.

    Good luck,

If you like private-label watches, there are some very nice Hamiltons with Canadian jeweler-contract markings.

Here is a photo of a grade 944 I used to own ...

... with a dial marked "Watson Bros., Diamond Hall, Calgary" and in a Canadian "Fortune" case. According to an email response from Don Dahlberg at the NAWCC Library (thanks again!) the movement was finished Feb. 2, 1907 and sold three days later to the Montreal Watch Case Company.

    BINGO!
Between 1923 and 1946, this Hamilton 944 was owned by a Mr. J. Donaldson and it was in case serial number 506596 at that time. It has a 23-year history of having been serviced by Dr. George F. Ritchie, a Canadian Pacific Railway watch inspector in Calgery (it figures!). During those 23 years, Dr. Ritchie cleaned it on about a two year cycle, changing the mainspring in March 1941 and putting in a new balance jewel in December 1944.

I wish I was there to buy it when you let it go,
