My Seth Thomas #89 movement which of course uses the square shaft for the minute hand, is about 2 minutes off top dead center to synch for chime operation. Can this be adjusted?

Yes. It is adjusted at the "J" hook which interacts with the center arbor. Widening the bend will cause the drop off for the strike earlier. Narrowing has the opposite affect. Tiny changes here make big results, so go slow.
BTW, the terminology for this is strike. Chimes play music ;)

Just study it for a while. And make sure you are moving in the direction to make the drop-off of the hook a bit later.

This is best done with the clock taken apart, with only the hand, handshaft, and hook in place.

Occasionally, simply flipping the hand over will make things better.

And, it's pretty easy to turn a non problem into a big problem doing this ...
