Can anyone help identifying this clock and the value?

Hi all,

I work for a charity and we recently had this given. All I can find are the words “FOREIGN” and E 13cm on the movement.

I’ll attach some pictures below. It has a pendulum and chime.

Thanks all,

Welcome to the forum.

'Foreign' on the movement indicates that the clock - more specifically, the movement - was made after 1925 and was imported into the U.K., in compliance with the Merchandise Marks Act of 1925 (a U.K. law).

Most clocks imported into the U.K. between the wars were from Germany and your clock is from Germany. Most of the movements were made by Kienzle, Mauthe and to a lesser extent, Junghans. All of these makers were among the largest and most prolific manufacturers. Based on the movement, I believe the movement was made by Mauthe, but this is just a guess.

Without 'Foreign' on the dial, this leads me to believe your clock was cased locally in the U.K.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

I also think this may be a movement made by Mauthe, though I am not certain.

In the heading of your thread you asked for the value. I am sorry to say that it is not a valuable clock. These clocks are extremely common and were made in their thousands and can be found in every charity shop and yard sale all over the UK.

I don't know whereabouts in the UK your shop is situated - that will affect the price somewhat - but these clocks are not very valuable. You could put £20 on it and reduce it later if it doesn't sell.

This is an Erhard Jauch Uhrenfabrik movement from the 1930's. They were one of several German firms producing chime movements for the British trade. The 'cowbell' pendulum was distinct of Erhard Jauch's movements of the period. Your clock plays Whittington or Westminster chimes and the case looks to be in good shape.
The chimes can also be silenced.

The Erhard Jauch movements were comparable to Petersen or Hermle in regards to manufacturing quality.
Mauthe did make a handful of combined Whittington/Westminster chime movements, however they look like this:

A brief peek on eBay UK reveals similar clocks being listed for anywhere between 10 to 120 GBP. There is no consistency with pricing and collectors who like these clocks are drawn more towards bargains than anything too costly. They were never 'valuable' or expensive clocks when new, but there are collectors out there who still like them. The clock being in good cosmetic condition is a plus - if the clock runs reliably, that's even better. If no one local takes any interest, I would suggest listing it on eBay with a starting bid of 10 GBP.

At least it won't give anyone indigestion.

Please not, I might be tempted to bid. Äh, stop, no, there is a Junghans clock of very similar design in my workshop, disassembled and waiting for a service since ... years. Thanks for reminding me, I might show it in the next few weeks or months, just like the Junghans Ato rediscovered recently.

HAC/Junghans did these clocks too... throughout the 1930's, the most common German manufacturers of these clocks and movements thereof were Kienzle (Haller), HAC/Junghans, Petersen, and GUFA. They're wonderful clocks and I consider them to be good starter pieces for any novice who wants to get into chime clocks.

If no one wants takes the clock in, perhaps the OP would like to keep it around for a while. It could be a nice one-time project or the start of a new hobby altogether.
