I was handed down a pocket watch from my great grandfather I'm having trouble finding any information on it. I can tell you it looks as if it says Carter and the number 6186 are on the case and the inside ? If you need pics or more info you can private message me thanx :)

Welcome to the board.....

Why not post some pictures here?

Klick on the fourth icon from the right in the header of your posting and upload some sharp pictures of the dial, movement and any markings on the inside of the casing.....

If you have problems uploading large pictures you can try to open them in paint and then "save as". That "saved as" picture usually uploads without any problems!

CCL, unfortunately your photos aren't good quality. The two important ones are the hallmarks and the movement. You need to take the photo in natural light or floodlight (no flashgun!) and avoid reflection, and you need to use the macro feature on your camera to get close-up focus. Also, we need to see the whole movement and not just the signature section. Do you think you could try again with these two?

The heradlic device engraved on the back cover may prove interesting. Can you see what the fist is holding? Sticks of corn?

The watch movement is typical English fusee from I would say 1869, like you have mentioned.. There are many Henry Carters listed in Loomes, could be a long family of watch makers/ retailers..I would venture to say the movement has 7 jewels and a lever escapement.. housed in a Sterling Silver case.. Looks to be a nice example, does it run when wound?? Not a hugly valuable watch, but with family history, the watch can not be replaced...Keep the heritage going .......
