While looking at railroad related images on the Library of Congress site, I came across this image of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad ticket office in Detroit, Michigan from about 1910. I was struck by the fact that, after a closer examination of the clock in the image, it appears to be non-functioning...just thought that was interesting. :?|

Probably because it was too close to the spittoon...

Seems to have only the hour hand. Not a confidence builder for a railroad.

Maybe that explains why the place is deserted?

Noel, was there any description with the picture saying it was closed, or any other hints? Lights were on, brochures/timetables/spittoon in place, but no people and only the one, non-functional, clock a la something out of the Twilight Zone!

Maybe it isn't working because it is the wrong time zone, i.e., Detroit is in the Eastern Standard Time Zone........................hmmmmm?

Judging by the font on the books (close up picture), the books look a lot newer than 1910. My guess is the photo is more recent than 1910. Therefore, the clock is a little neglected. Doesn't look like that area of the station is in practical use (no people in the daylight). That's what I see. Captions under the paintings could be from a later date.
