    ____________________________________________

While sundials are a vital and important part of horological history there are surprisingly few publications dealing with the subject, and the majority of them seem to deal with the mathematics, geometry and astronomy needed to lay out their dials, rather than the aestetics. A pleasant exception to this is the book under review. For decades the Berlin based sundial aficionado Günther Behmesh has systematically photographed and documented sundials, and has recently published a comprehensive, color illustrated directory of them.

About 100 examples are illustrated (in mostly full color images) facing a page of descriptive text (in German). The entry includes the Berlin street address of the shown sun dial, so a viator to Berlin can use it as a guide book to a comprehensive sundial walk through the city.

But even if you are unlikely to visit Berlin soon any sundial fa will be entranced by the variety and craftsmanship of the illustrated dials.

The author deserves the gratitude of the sundial community for creating this addition to the gnomatic literature.

Fortunat, do you know if there are plans to publish the book in English? It looks like a great resource.

    Thanks, Pat
