• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

I am looking to buy 3 specific books:
1) James Tigner's "Questions and Answers for the Clockmaker"
2) Mervyn Passmore's "AnniversaryClock Adjusting"
3) "Horolovar's 400 Day Clock Repair Guide"

I have done a moderate seach but had no luck. I figuered this board would be an excellent resource. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Sincerely, John#0159010

Never heard of (1), but Mervyn Passmore's book will be available from Meadows & Passmore here (in UK) and I think Terwilliger is as well.

The Terwilliger book appears on eBay frequently as well.

Be careful, spelling counts.

I tried all three of your requests and obtained hits. As usual neither I nor this board endorses the suppliers the quality of their offerings or the rationality of the listed prices (And I have seen some whoppers)

I have bought many books via this route and have been satisfied with all my purchases but in many books I have balked at the prices and bought from other sources.

Re: books: to purchase/edition choice??

Actually just one more question for you all:

Does it make any difference if I buy an earlier edition (4th) or should I buy a newer edition/newer printing? I am speaking generally and, specifically, I am referring to Terwilliger's book. Thank you all for your help.
Sincerely, John #0159010

I hapen to own copies of every edition from the 1st (1962) to the 10th edition (1991) and every one is a bit different. Terwilliger continually expenaded the book by having specifications (sample backplates) for more movement types.

E.g. from the 9th to the 10th edition, the book grew from 227 to 237 pages

The 3rd edition 1956 had only 127 pages.

I do not know if after Terwilliger died in the 1990s further editions were updated or just reprinted.

#1. is available from the American Watch & Clock Institute. You can order it from their website. This is a great reference book, well worth the money. #2 & #3. are both available from Merritts. Not to demean anyones book but I doubt if you'll find anything in the Passmore book that isn't available in the Horolovar Guide. It's pretty much the bible when it comes to 400 day Clocks. It's a wealth of info if you like fooling with Anniversary Clocks.
My personal opinion always try to buy the latest edition of any horological reference text if you can.I have looked at early Horolovar Guides at the marts and they have no where near the reference plates that the latest editions have.
I have no relationship with any of the above mentioned vendors or authors.

John, you should buy the newest (10th edition) of the 400 day clock guide. Each newer edition is updated as new information was found. I think another edition may be in the works.

John,

Wouldn't bother with the Passmore book. I have one and it is extraordinarily padded out with tear out pages to "give to customers".

This is under the guise of being helpful but is just a way of making a very thin book a little thicker.

Terwilliger's book is far more useful and makes the Passmore one redundant.

Ralph, many repairers find the owners of 400 Day Clocks as much of a problem as their adjustments - this is why the extra pull out pages are there. They are not there to 'pad the book out' as you put it.

The Horolovar 400 Day Repair Guide does provide detailed information on setting up, but in my experience its illustrations such as Figures 16 & 22 can intimidate amateur repairers to the extent that they give up hope.
