From what I have read it is a process of replacing the copper with selenium, in a similar way that the copper is replaced with silver though the reaction process is different.

Edit, not so different. I didn't realise displacement reactions were a subset of redox reactions, non chemist here.

That sort of depends on how black you want it? Tool black does a decent job of 'blackening" brass, but it does not leave it dead black. More old brass look than black.
