    Greetings all,
I am interested in history, design, evolution, manufacturers... of cuckoo clocks. Could anybody tell me if the title "Black Forest clockmaker and the cuckoo clock" by Karl Kochmann is a good one. Does anybody know more books? Thanks in advance.

I am of the impression Kochmann's work is the standard on cuckoos. In the early stages of clock repair, I studied Kochmann's drawings to understand a particular cuckoo feature. It is also used regularly for determining the age of a cuckoo since the author dates a variety of features; weights, plates, case construction. Lots of good stuff here! My only complaint is the binding. After several uses, the binding on my book fell apart. I ended up pulling all pages apart and punching them for a small three ring binder. However, my book is a 1987 edition. It has since been reprinted and hopefully has a better binding. Bill

THE BOOK YOU ARE REFERING TO IS:

Title: Black Forest Clockmaker and the Cuckoo clock
    Author: Karl Kochmann
    Publisher: Antique Clocks
    Keywords: regional BlackForest
    Other Keywords: Schwatzwald
    ISBN: 0 933396 30 9
    Language: ENG
Notes: Overview of german cuckoo clocks from black forest (special edition for 1990 NAWCC National door gift)
    Edition: 1996 -- Copyright: 1978
    Kind: Book
    Type: Clock (general)
    Geographic area: Germany
    Topic: History
    Organization: NA/other
    Pages: 226 -- Height in cm: 22
Print Status: 1 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)
    BookID: 1736
    ---------------------------------

There are actualy many editions starting in 1978 up to 1994, plus later eprints of the 1994 3eition. I consider it an OK book, but not a particularly ood one. Like most of Kochmanns boos this is mainly a somewhat disorganised compilation of all kind of facts from various sources rather than an attempt at serious scholarship.

The only other book dealing specifically with the cuckooclock in English that I have is:

    --------------------------------------------

: How to Train a Cuckoo (Clock) without flying over the nest
SubTitle: The Wag on the Wall
    Author: Malcolm C. Gerschler
    Publisher: Wag on the Wall
    Other Keywords: cuckoo
    Language: ENG
Notes: repair and maintane of cuckoo clock
    Edition: 1979 -- Copyright: 1979
    Kind: Book
    Type: Wall clock
    Geographic area: Germany
    Topic: Repair
    Organization: NA/other
    Pages: 19 -- Height in cm: 21
Print Status: 2 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)
    BookID: 1091

    ----------------------------------------
This is a small booklet, with a few practical hints, but no real history on the subject.

There is one excellent German language book on the subject, a book dealing only with cuckoo clocks:

    Title: Kuckucks Uhren
Author: Richard Mühe, Helmut Kahlert, Beatrice Techen
    Publisher: Callwey Verlag
    Other Keywords: cuckoo
    ISBN: 3 7667 0909 7
    Language: GER
Notes: illustrated Book in German on CooCou Clocks
    Edition: 1988 -- Copyright: 1988
    Kind: Book
    Type: Wall clock
    Geographic area: Germany
    Topic: History
    Organization: NA/other
    Pages: 114 -- Height in cm: 22
Print Status: 1 (1 means in print - 2 means out of print)
    BookID: 1733

Thanks bchaps for your information and also horology for the complete data on the books related to cuckoo clocks. I think Kuckucks uhren by Richard Mühe... it´s the best one because of I am more interested in history, design, manufacturers... I mean the artistic part of the clock and not the mechanical. Regards.

    Hello all,

Juan, you can find information about Black Forest clocks and cuckoo clocks in the web

    http://www.cucoclock.com

You can check the list of books in the web, in the section: Bibliografía

Some of these books are very interesting to learn more about Black Forest Clocks. Another books are about automatons, etc.

The web is only in spanish by the moment.

    Best regards,
