Very pretty clock, I think it is probably Austrian. The musicbox movement for these clocks were often made by a specialist in Prague (the musical movements were often marked).

The hands are not quite what I would have expected but they seem to fit.

Biedermeier Portaluhr mit Spielwerk. If you know German.
1820/40 strikes 1/2/3/4 on quarter hour plus the hour after. Plus has a music box you wind on demand. Directly from Germany. Running beautiful.
24" tall x 15"wide

Forgive if asking about the obvious, but not my area of specialty.

It appears that the area above the dial enclosed in curve glass was/is a place for an automaton? If so, does that work?

Don't see a linkage with the movement, but your screen shot pix (I assume you don't have the clock in hand yet) doesn't seem to show one.

Most of the Austrian clocks of this ilk I have seen with an automaton had it placed on the dial, e.g., cherubs hammering their love arrows on an anvil, that sort of thing.
