• Upcoming updates
Over the next couple of weeks we will be performing software updates on the forum. These will be completed in small steps as we upgrade individual software addons. You might occasionally see a maintenance message that will last a few minutes at most.

If we anticipate an update will take more than a few minutes, we'll put up a notice with estimated time.

    Thank you!

Beat setting tool repair.

After babying this little Gizmo along for about 25 years, it finally stripped out. :(

I was wondering what path others may have taken to repair/improve this important little fella?i Willie X

If only screw bad replace.

If female is bad then take it to a well stocked family run hardware store.

Look or ask for a seft tapping screw just bigger than old one.

Correct one will create new threads in the hole.

Next get a standard screw of same size to use.

In future some oil on screw and insure screw has good quality threads that are smooth.

Have used various levers where there is an opening. Sometimes use a little blue locktite on the block holder screw and only tighten snug, can use screwdriver slot to move it then. Also made a tool after being inspired by Dell's modified needle nose pliers but I used a cheap pair of needle nose locking pliers. I always look at the block holder under high magnification when making adjustments so I can see just how far it moved.

I found that the thread was a regular
#10 - 24 and the female part was all still good. So, a stove bolt and a little washer got me back in business.

This tool is very handy but the materials are a little sketchy. Hopefully it will go another 25 years? Willie X

So is that custom part TIG or MIG welded? Looks good!

Here is one that probably would of worked for you - McMaster-Carr

Your screw and washer idea should work fine and was that a silver solder job? Looks good, as I can tell it is not mig or tig welded.

I wouldn't say that, after using that one for about 25 years. Good design, not so good on the materials, as already mentioned. :) Willie X

As a machinist pretty sure we could make a better one.

Yes a better one could be made, for a price.

The problem is that people try to use this little tool to turn a tight post. It is not to be used as a hand vise. Just loosen the screw and lightly snug it back down, adjust as necessary and your done. There is no need to tighten the tension screw.

Willie has it exactly right - and trying to tighten the screw further once you've got it in beat is almost guaranteed to throw it out of beat.

I found the tool useless but maybe the modern ones are different, I have modified a pair of old snap on pliers.
