I love to collect Ball railroad watches but I especially like to acquire those that are marked Ball & CO.
Here are two example of early Ball & Co watches the 18sz is a Hamilton, the 16sz is a Waltham, both marked 17j.
While all Ball watches are collectible, these early one hold a special need in me to have them.
:D

Watchnut,

Welcome aboard! Several share your interest and enthusiasm for these early Ball Watches. Nice watches, do you have any others to share with us?

There have been some great bulletin articles over the years about them, including Ed and Kent's series starting with whole number 238.

A lot of great threads on this board also, be sure to check out the pinned past pocket watch thread on top of the pocket watch page!

happy hunting,

I too have an interest in railroad watches and just got a Ball that I am investigating, it looks just like the 16s you posted but sn is B200928.

The case is really worn where people have unscrewed the back. Inside the back cover are many small numbers inscribed like R-8900 and R-1801 or 49327. These numbers go around the inside of the back case. My assumption is that these were maintenance records on the watch but that is just speculation.

Thanks for the post.

Rick:

Ed and I have the following 16-size, 19-jewel, Official Standard (ORRS if not onted otherwise) grade Ball Watch Co. watches listed in our data base:

B 200,016
B 200,061 - ORC
B 200,187
B 200,289 - BofLE
B 200,349
B 200,396 - BofLF&E
B 200,406
B 200,537
B 200,553
B 200,568
B 200,938
B 200,953

Is yours also a 19-jewel ORRS? Is it in a "Ball Model" case?

The marks in the case back are, as you guessed, Watch Repairers' Marks.

Sorry for the delay in my post. My wife and I, probably mainly me, have wanted to go to the Railroad Museum in Dallas for some time and today was the day. I must say that it is very impressive and I can now recommend it to others. It was well worth the cost of $5.00 per person.

And now down to watch business. I am attaching some pictures of my watch for your perusal. It is 19j and is in a well worn Ball case. I will be happy to provide you with any additional information on this watch.

Seeing the post I realize that the picture of the back of the case is probably not the best so here is another one that shows the information you requested in a better light.
